Andreas Gstöttenbauer has been working for Wacker Neuson for 10 years and is responsible for product management at the Hörsching site near Linz. In addition to the wheeled excavators, he is also in charge of the teams for excavators, attachments, dumpers and track dumpers.
What is special about a Wacker Neuson excavator?
We would like to generate obvious benefits for the target group of each machine. It is important to know that there is no "universal machine" for all customers, sectors, areas of use or country. However, there are aspects which always play a role: We always emphasize performance. Comfort and ergonomics are also high on the agenda. In addition, low machine maintenance costs are a significant aspect. Quality is extremely important: We use high quality components and check quality requirements from our customers constantly. Naturally, a Wacker Neuson excavator also exploits innovations, such as are seen with solutions like VDS or dual power.
Which new and further developments are in the pipeline?
In the early part of 2018, we will be launching two new excavators in the 3.5-ton class, in which we have made significant further developments in existing and proven fields. The new models are characterized by faster working cycles, low maintenance costs and more comfort – to name just a few points. Models in the 5- and 6-ton class, which we have developed specially for the Chinese market, are extremely exciting and challenging. The requirements clearly differ from those in Europe or the USA. These machines will be produced in our new factory in Pinghu, close to Shanghai. The exhaust class 5 for Europe, which becomes effective in 2019, is of course occupying us and is taking up many resources.

What is the excavator of the future going to look like?
In the smaller machines, electronics - with all their advantages and disadvantages – will play a greater role, whether this be with electronically controlled engines, in the area of telematics or with automated processes and movements. Electrification will also continue to move forwards. We are seriously expanding our know-how and our position in this segment. However, in my opinion the diesel engine will be with us for a long time yet.
